“Move,” she told herself, urging her feet forward, past her fear and the rats that seemed to be everywhere. Past the memories and cold panic slithering up her spine.

“Fear weakens. Courage strengthens.” Ariana pushed forward, onwards to the house.

A house. Just a house.

She ran on, through the filth, over the shit and dirt; her foot stood on something that moved and squealed.

“Fuck!” she yelped. She couldn’t help it slipping out when she squashed the rodent beneath her, but she didn’t stop. She carried on, counting the buildings, and slowed when she drew near her target.

Finally, she reached the building. She saw the back of the house she’d been sent to, and she saw something else; a light in two windows. A sign of someone inside. Or something.

Human or Supernatural? She couldn’t be sure. She wasn’t tasked with finding that out. But it could help them if they knew, couldn’t it? Ariana stopped at the broken gate leading into the yard, which was just as dirty and just as littered with filth and debris. Could she get nearer to see inside? Would she be able to ascertain who could be there? Shifters? Vampires? Humans?

Was it worth the risk?

“That wasn’t your mission.” She shook her head, nibbling her bottom lip.

She debated the threat, the chance of being caught, the chance of losing her life and never being found, of not getting the information back to Lazarus. Then the decision was taken out of her hands. The back door flew open, and two figures sped toward her, too fast for any human.

Ariana’s heart stopped in her chest, stopped dead before it sped up and she turned and ran, knowing she wouldn’t make it. She wouldn’t get to the end of the alley before they were on her. She’d have to fight to survive.

Would she make it? Would she get out of this filth with her heart still beating? Or would they kill her and leave her to the rats?

“No!” she yelled, her legs pushing her forward with a burst of speed she didn’t know she had.

The thought of falling in the alley, of them leaving her to the rats, poured adrenaline into her system. So much, so fast, that she flew along in the darkness at a speed she’d never reached before. But it wasn’t fast enough. She heard them behind her. Heard them catching up. She had to face them. She had to do something before they launched themselves onto her back; she couldn’t allow that, couldn’t have them attack her rear.

Face your assailants. Always. Never allow them to take you down.

Ariana saw the gate to another house and slowed down and side stepped into it; the men behind her were flying so fast that they went right on by for several feet before they turned back to face her. Both of them glowered at her with a look telling her they had one thing on their mind; her death.

“Like snooping, bitch?”

Ariana didn’t answer the taller of the men, but her eyes confirmed her suspicions; he wasn’t human.
